Office Building Wayfinding

Johnston Crossing Central Offices | Greenville, SC

Challenge:

The client inherited a building which lacked a sufficient signage system, as the building was being used for a much different use. The building’s interior was largely monotone. Visitors and staff found to difficult to navigate the building and distinguish between different office halls and rooms.

Solution:

I developed a comprehensive wayfinding system that transformed the office into an easy-to-navigate space. With inspiration from the MTA Subway System, I utilized simple, high-contrast color coding and bold typography to give visual cues. This transit-style logic allowed for vibrant colors in the building’s neutral palette, making the new functional signage a key aesthetic feature of the interior design.

Implementation:

  • I assigned specific color palettes to different hallways as “streets”, helping visitors identify their location within the building easily, much like a subway line.

  • Using bold, sans-serif typefaces and intentional measuring, I made sure that directional signs were legible from further away, also making it easy for visitors to navigate.

  • I retained the MTA-style structure of each sign as a connecting element between all parts of the building.
